Invest in Your Spine: Prevent Back Pain Through Daily Habits

On 16th October 2025, we at Proactive Chiropractic and Sports Injury Clinic marked World Spine Day, a day that raises awareness of good spine health and its importance in our daily lives.

In light of this, we want to provide you with information around this year’s theme of investing in your spine, and raise awareness of healthy habits to empower you to make positive decisions in relation to your spine.

Do you ever stop to think how much your spine does for you – and what you can do to help return the favour?

Every twist, turn and step we take (as well as sitting up straighter whilst reading and working) relies on your spine’s strength and mobility. Your spine is made up of 33 vertebrae, with over 100 muscles helping to create a network to hold you upright and keep you moving. It also protects and maintains the spinal cord, which is important for all forms of movement and function day-to-day. When we have disruptions or increases in pressure around the spinal cord, we tend to see back pain or dysfunction in a musculoskeletal sense. The intervertebral discs and joint, found between the vertebrae, act as a natural shock absorber and allows for distribution of body weight, as well as managing that stress throughout the body.

However, life is never ideal. On overage we spend over seven hours of our day sitting, and your spine feels and controls every minute of it. Many of us commute multiple times per day, and we can all be guilty of scrolling on our phones for extended periods. All of these activities will have an impact on the different joints in our spine and our bodies will adapt to these positions over time. It can be the small, common habits that need to be managed to alleviate back pain.

Chiropractic care helps to manage all areas around the issue – whether that be muscular or the joint, or both, to help restore mobility and, in some cases, nerve function. Contrary to some beliefs, Chiropractors do not “correct” or “realign” your spine. Instead, we aid the body in moving and functioning in the best way possible whilst managing your goals and expectations. We at Proactive provide you with patient-centred, evidence-based care to help you understand and manage your pain through tailored rehabilitation plans, as well as self-help tips to manage symptoms between appointments.

For those of you who have not yet booked an appointment, here are some spine-friendly habits that you can perform for this week.

  • Take consistent micro-breaks from sitting every 30-45 minutes, with movement built into your break.

  • Stay active - try and reintroduce small consistent movements, walking, stretching or even yoga.

  • Maintain a balanced diet for both bone and muscle health.

If you feel you need some advice or are wanting to book in, do not hesitate to contact the clinic via email or on the phone at your convenience, and one of our friendly staff members will be able to speak with you.
